RIVER STREET ART FEST AWARD WINNERS
River Street Art Fest took place on April 4-5 during First Friday & Saturday on historic River Street. The weekend was a celebration of visual arts, music, and dance! Select regional and national artisans were invited to display and sell their hand crafted art. In addition each artist submitted one piece of work to be scored by a panel of judges on Saturday, April 5.
Four judges selected a winner in five categories. The judges included: photographer, Aaron Brumbelow; illustrator, Michael Clark; local artist, Jim Cone and Kelley McClung, Chair of Foundation Studies at Savannah College of Art and Design. Cash prizes were awarded to Jennifer Grimes (jewelry design), Eric Soller (painting), Winthrope Hiers (photography), Mike Merrit (wood works) and Carl Crawford (mixed media). Crawford received the highest scores overall and was awarded “Best in Show.”
The judges were also responsible for selecting the top three designs for this year’s community art project. To assist local elementary schools with much needed art supplies the Savannah Waterfront Association hosted an art contest among the schools. Savannah Coca-Cola donated syrup barrels that students decorated for the festival. The themes for the designs were school spirit, scenes of Savannah, and of course River Street! The decorated barrels were displayed during the festival weekend. There were over 10 Chatham County Schools who entered the competition. The top three designs were Port Wentworth Elementary, Pooler Elementary and Esther F. Garrison School of Visual and Performing Arts. The Savannah Waterfront Association gave a total of $1,300 to the participating schools to benefit their art programs.
